Essentially every digital service we use asks us for consent.

In computing and Social Media a black box is is a device which can be viewed as its inputs and outputs without any knowledge of its internal workings.

Inside the black clamshell box is a 5 part series of mini projects inspired by the Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy in Social Networks.

The clamshell box is tied with a belly band that reads ‘By opening this belly band you agree to my terms’. The first mini project you see is some written terms for the viewer, in this case the viewer was a tutor, within the terms the tutors were to consent to giving me full marks in the module.

In this research publication I chose to focus Social Networks, the services that are built on user generated content. I took a personal approach with this as I have consented to all of the UK’s top 10 most popular Social Networks terms without reading them.

Before this publication I analysed the user interface design of the sign up pages against The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst. I also analysed the content of the compulasary acceptance information.

Even thouh this is is a personal response it will provoke conversation about a subject that is very current and generate questions from the viewer.

Extracts of social media terms with sections covered by a block to create a new narrative. This is printed on two stocks one being 160gsm cartridge and the other transparent tracing paper.
Mini poster cards with further extracts from Social Media Terms, these experiment with typography sizes and hierarchy to play tricks on the viewer.

This is a set of posters that have a hidden message that is revealed by adding a filter on instagram. It encourages people to post the photo on Instagram with the #thefineprint
